Exercise Programs
Wherever you are on the continuum of aging, it is important to learn how to live in appropriate ways in order to maximize health and happiness. We all know that exercise is important at any age, but what’s important for advanced age is choosing appropriate exercise that your body accepts and responds to.
For example, exercise or sports you did in your 20s are not likely to be appropriate for age 60+, but that doesn’t mean you stop exercising. Find appropriate activities for your age and physical condition that you also enjoy doing. For example:
- For cardio, you can walk, swim, or dance. In fact, ballroom and square dancing involve both physical and mental stimulation significant enough to help ward off dementia.
- For strength training—try weights, household and gardening chores, or the natural resistance that water creates when swimming.
- For balance and flexibility, consider yoga, ballet, or tai chi.
